Here’s a word you haven’t heard in decades: MACARENA

Newcastle United, their players, staff and supporters had a lot to smile about on Wednesday night as they thrashed West Ham in London to remain third in the Premier League standings. But the biggest source of laughs on the night was striker Callum Wilson and his silly “Macarena” celebration.Wilson scored the opening goal with a firm header from an Allan Saint-Maximin cross and decided to fulfil his promise to his friend, West Ham player Michail Antonio. The pair have a podcast for the BBC discussing football matters. And in one of the episodes, they agreed that they should celebrate in front of each other in case either gets on the scoresheet when the Magpies play the Irons. And the celebration? Macarena!Tomorrow night’s a big one for the ‘Footballers Football Podcast!’ @Michailantonio you better save the celebration for another game bro 😅Latest episode out now on @bbcsounds https://t.co/nZ7nC7CP6L pic.twitter.com/wNPwT0SraR— Callum Wilson (@CallumWilson) February 3, 2023 If you’re too young to remember, Macarena is a Spanish song from 1996 that became a worldwide hit. The catchy song with a designated dance from the music video took the world over and could be seen in clubs, streets, stadiums – everywhere. Even though that song doesn’t come up on the radio nowhere near as often, it still strikes a chord – pun intended. And clearly, there are footballers aged around 30 who still find the dance inspiring.##NAJAVA_MECA_7158463##Speaking after the game, Wilson explained where did the throwback celebration come from.”There is a story. Michail Antonio and I do a podcast together. He’s been giving me stick about whoever scores needs to do this celebration. You get caught up in the moment after you score. I got a bit of stick but it was nice to do it in front of the West Ham fans, but it’s not personal.”Former players working as pundits at Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp and Jobi McAnuff, were delighted with the dance. And they couldn’t resist doing some of it in front of the cameras.Jamie Redknapp and Jobi McAnuff dancing along with Wilson in the TV studioWilson’s dream record against West Ham continued as he made it 12 goals against the Hammers in the Premier League. It’s no wonder he felt like dancing, unlike his buddy Michail, who was substituted off as the London side suffered another loss and is now facing a battle against relegation. Callum didn’t mind, though!”Michail ran off and didn’t want to speak to me. The next podcast will be fun for me, not for him! It’s tradition now. Sometimes you have teams you play against. I enjoy playing against them, and you just have a feeling you’re going to score.”

Wilson has been in fine goalscoring form for the Magpies, previously getting on the scoresheet in Newcastle’s 2-0 victory against Manchester United on Sunday. The dance continues.
