Former Harambee Stars captain Dennis Oliech says Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala deserves to have been given a chance to feature in last month’s friendly match against Iran in Tehran.Oliech has faulted coach Engin Firat for dropping the player at the last minute and believes Kenya would have got something from the match if Omalla had played.“Omala is currently the top scorer in the Kenyan league and for that only he deserves to have been allowed to play in that match. Dropping him sends the wrong signal to other players,” said Oliech.He argues that Harambee Stars need to start thinking about the future without current captain Michael Olunga and believes the Gor Mahia striker can easily fit in this shoes. Oliech: Kenya football problems deeper than just the presidency“In a few years, Olunga may not be as lethal as he is at the moment and we need someone who can start understudying him now so that he can come in if he can no longer score the goals. In my opinion, Omala fits the bill perfectly. By now, the two should be playing together regularly to increase the team’s chances of scoring goals. Olunga has been playing alone for a long time and he needs a striker to support him.”Omala solidified his lead in the top scorers chart with a brace as Gor Mahia edged Bandari 2-1 in Mombasa on Wednesday evening. ##NAJAVA_MECA_7171952##Oliech also pointed out that Stars lost the match against Iran due to schoolboy errors which he believes should not be committed at this level.“When you look at the second goal forexample, the defenders gave the opponents too much room to execute. When taking free-kicks of penalties, the level of concentration must be at an all-time high but we didn’t see these.” He said. Oliech is happy with the pedigree of Kenya’s opponents and advised Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to aim for such matches in future.“After Iran, we must aim for even bigger teams and play them consistently.
