Aryna Sabalenka ends Mirra Andreeva’s breakthrough run at Madrid Open

  • Second seed defeats 16-year-old Russian 6-3, 6-1 in fourth round
  • Andreeva had been on 16-match winning streak

After a week of picking apart top-level players on one of the biggest stages possible, the 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva’s breakout run at the Madrid Open came to an end on Monday as she was outclassed by Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round.

Andreeva, a runner-up in the Australian Open girls’ event, arrived in the fourth round on a 16-match winning run. In addition to winning two consecutive ITF titles in April, Andreeva picked off two top-20 opponents in Madrid – Beatriz Haddad Maia and Magda Linette. On Saturday, she turned 16.
