AFC Leopards management goes hard on players after go slow

AFC Leopards have made headlines for all the wrong reasons in the last few days, and now the club hierarchy has decided to rain hard on the playing unit after what they term continued cases of indiscipline in the playing. What had been simmering disquiet in the team came to the fore last week when the players boycotted training on Friday and had to be begged to travel to Mumias on Saturday for the game against Vihiga, which they unsurprisingly lost to the already-relegated FKF Premier League team.##NAJAVA_MECA_7306216##On Wednesday, without giving much detail, the club announced that it had made changes in the playing unit leadership, relegating Eugene Mukangula and Peter Thiong’o from their roles of captain and assistant captain, respectively, in a move that Mozzart Sport understands is aimed at curbing the rising rebellion within the squad. How did Leopards get here? It all started with the players receiving 75% of their May salaries with the promise that the rest would be settled this week when the club’s sponsor wires in money. The players maintained that they wanted all their monies paid, which resulted in them boycotting training on Friday and also threatening not to travel for the game in Mumias. After hours of pleading, the players eventually agreed to depart for Mumias for the game, which they lost 2-1. A section of the fans present at the stadium did not mince their words as they bashed the players and advised them to leave the club if they did not want to play for the badge anymore.Pastor was not happy after AFC Leopards lost to Vihiga Bullets in Mumias. #FKFPL pic.twitter.com/pQ207CD2Qk— Ole Teya (@TeyaKevin) June 5, 2023 Three weeks earlier, the players were swimming in money. They had been awarded Ksh 300,000 by sports CS Ababu Namwamba and his ICT counterpart, Eliud Owalo, before the Mashemeji derby. After the derby, President William Ruto awarded them Ksh1 million. The club hierarchy let the players and staff share all 1.3 million, much to the delight of the playing unit.”We let them have all the money as a sign of goodwill because they have pushed themselves well this season. They are not entitled to the money; there is no clause in their contracts that states that they should share gifts and donations with the team,” a club official told Mozzart Sport. After the go slow witnessed in the team last week, the club management recalled the goodwill that it had extended to the players and decided to recover the money by converting it to winning allowances. Earlier this week, when the players were handed documents that indicated that the 1.3 million that they had received was part of their winning allowances, they blatantly refused to sign the documents, putting them further at loggerheads with the club officials. The club has already made it clear that it is not going to renew most of the expiring contracts, and some whose contracts are still running may equally find themselves out of the club as coach Patrick Aussems begins rebuilding in readiness for next season after a two-window FIFA-imposed transfer ban.”There are bad apples that must be removed. We have tolerated bad behavior for way too long, and we have to draw the line lest we experience the same problems again next season,” the source added.Tusker, Gor, and Homeboyz risk missing continental football as CAF gets tough
