Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) president James Situma who, has been re-elected to lead the players’ body for a second term stretching five years has, promised to work with the federation and clubs to give players better working condition.The Association went to the pools of Saturday 10 June in Nairobi, this being their second exercise inside 13 years with Situma and his vice president Terry Ouko going unopposed.A former league winner with Tusker and Sofapaka, the retired Kenyan international says, a lot is in store for its members as they embark on yet another journey of fighting for players’ welfare.“As we move forward, we will advocate for the implementation of a standard contract that ensures fair treatment & just remuneration for our players.This will solidify the foundation of our union, guaranteeing minimum wage bills stipulated by law”_James Situma #KefwaElections pic.twitter.com/Ts2tPSwzKJ— KEFWA (@kefwaofficial) June 10, 2023 “It has been a journey and I am happy that the players have trusted in my ability to lead them again. It is not an easy task since we have a lot to tackle but we have a plan. With the help of the federation, we will have a sit down with the clubs and iron out a few things including introducing a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that will see players guaranteed a basic entry level renumeration that has been agreed on as we work our way into tackling other matters,” Situma offered. The association boss says that there needs to be a change in strategy in how football is handled in this country, calling on all stakeholders to offer solutions as opposed to criticism and move the sport forward.Situma says the CBA should have non-negotiable deliverables like player insurance to avoid instances where players are sidelined due to injury and are left to deal with the aftermath on their own.John Mark Makwata’s contract terminated in BotswanaThe former Harambee Stars defender will work alongside other elected leaders including FKFPL player representative Posta Rangers FC forward Cavin Odongo who beat Tusker FC skipper Humphrey Mieno to the post.National Super League will be represented by Isaac Oburu at the association, having defeated rival Robert Ouma while the WPL will have Catherine Nabiswa as their representative. The players should not be made to feel like they are being done a favour when the basics are provided. The leagues have to run smoothly and players have to be taken care of and their job respected,” Ouko offered.
