Nairobi City Stars manager believes his team can only make a step forward after what has been ‘rocky’ a ride for the club this season.A year after leading his side to a decent sixth-placed finish in the 2021/2022 season, head coach Nicholas Muyoti was through the wringer for the entire season this year, seeing his side battle on the wrong end of the table, as they looked to integrate new faces in.”I struggled to do what I studied, which was IT. I was about to lose my job,” Muyoti told Mozzart Sport while reflecting on the just concluded season. “Just by the fact that the team and management understands its role and objective, they understood the big task ahead and were patient with us and we sought to integrate the new players through the transition phase.I am happy the board has been supportive of the team and the young players, and you can see, they gained confidence, grew well and saw us through the line.”This has been my toughest season yet – City Stars boss Nicholas Muyoti admitsThe team ended up finishing 15th on the log with 34 points, taking the lead before falling apart to the eventual champions – Gor Mahia – 4-1 in the season ender on Sunday at the Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi.“From what I have seen in the second leg, I am very confident,” Muyoti added. “The changes we are going to make this season will be very minimal. From that progress, it is clear of the levels we can reach.”Pointing out to the change in trajectory the team moved – from winning September’s Elite Preseason Cup to struggling early on in the season – the former Kakamega Homeboyz head coach said; “Something on the way (after the Elite Cup) went wrong. I believe it’s something that we had to go through as a team to make sure that if we are standing up we are standing out strong.”Stakeholders meeting clears path for Kenya Swimming Federation electionsLooking forward to the next season, albeit early, Muyoti hopes that he can keep the majority of his players, referring them to ‘the foundation that we have built to push us next season.Kevin Etemesi, the club’s top scorer with 12 goals is among the players linked with a move out of the club, with Mozzart Sport reporting up to three clubs interested in his services.“Any changes we make now will be to beef up our team that will attack the next season,” Muyoti reaffirmed.
