Jonathan Gonzalez faces offf Gerardo Zapata on Friday, October 27 at Polideportivo Alexis Arguello in Managua, Nicaragua. The contest features Puerto Rican WBO light flyweight champion up against contender, representing the country-host. The World championship bout is scheduled for 12 rounds. The event airs live stream on ESPN+.
Gonzalez (27-3-1, 14 KOs) goes through the ropes for the first time in almost a year. In his previous bout last November on the Teraji vs Kyoguchi card in Japan, The Bronx, New York native scored a unanimous decision against Shokichi Iwata. The 32-year-old southpaw makes the third defense of his belt.
Miami, Florida-based Zapata (14-1-1, 5 KOs) was in action in August when he fought Azael Villar to a split draw. Last December, Managua, Nicaragua native collected his first career defeat via second-round controversial disqualification against Rene Santiago. The 29-year-old makes his first attempt to become world champion.
In the co-feature, Puerto Rico’s Rene Santiago (11-3, 8 KOs) defends his WBO Latino light flyweight belt against Kevin Vivas (7-0, 2 KOs) of Nicaragua. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds.
Among Gonzalez vs Zapata undercard bouts, Eveling Junieth Ortega (5-4, 2 KOs) of Nicaragua and Silvia Duran (3-1, 2 KOs) of Costa Rica meet in a six-round bout at women’s light flyweight. As well, Harvin Aguirre (8-0, 6 KOs) and Israel Lopez (11-3-1, 8 KOs) go toe-to-toe in an eight-round all-Nicaraguan bout at welterweight. Plus, Gerardo Sanchez (8-1, 5 KOs) of Honduras and Eduardo Ajito (11-0, 5 KOs) of Peru clash in an eight-round bout at light flyweight.
Among the non-televised prelims, Alex Vallecillo (4-0, 4 KOs) meets Christian Jimenez (5-0, 4 KOs) in a six-round all-Nicaraguan bout at super bantamweight. In addition, Michael Carmona (3-0, 1 KOs) meets fellow-Nicaraguan Miguel Tercero (0-2) in a four-round bout at light flyweight.
