Billionaires all over the world are the same – they don’t want to lose money they invest, on the contrary, they want more money. And it goes for all of them, in all parts of life, sports included. So when a lifelong Manchester United supporter and billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave 1.3 billion pounds to buy 25% of his favourite club (the deal is still subject to approval by the Premier League), the last thing he wants to do is to see that money go down in drain, just because the sporting sector is underachieving. Ratcliffe and his right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford issued a ‘rallying cry’ to United’s management and staff by urging them to work together to restore former glories. According to Daily Mail, they have relayed the same message during a series of meetings with staff this week, making it clear United’s on-field performance in recent years have been unacceptable. Their aim is to restore United to the high standards and success seen during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era. And that means one thing – Erik ten Hag is under a hot seat.Ratcliffe and Brailsford meeting Ten Hag and the squad. pic.twitter.com/W3jA46UhEv— United Peoples TV (@UnitedPeoplesTV) January 5, 2024 New minority owner or not, the Dutch tactician has not had a good campaign so far, and even thou he spoke with Ratcliffe and was pleased that somebody will finally get a grip with the sports sector, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that he is basically from now on some sort of trial with the new co-owners.“Erik ten Hag is on trial as Manchester United manager since the Ineos ‘takeover’. He is effectively an interim coach until the end of the season. Unless there is a significant upturn in results and performances, he will have to go. This is a natural consequence of significant boardroom upheaval. Wherever there is new investment at an elite football club, an instant review of every department follows – especially those that are malfunctioning” he wrote in his column in The Telegraph.Ten Hag is optimistic after talks with RatcliffeUnlike the marketing department, which gets bigger and better financial deals for the club who is getting worse by the year, the sporting sector has not proven good, and Ratcliffe will leave no stones unturned, especially since he hasn’t appointed any of the current management members and is no obliged to them.“If you are Sir Jim Ratcliffe and vowing to pump billions of pounds into the club, one of the first priorities is establishing whether you have a coach who represents the dynamism you want associated with your business. Ratcliffe will attend his first United game as a major shareholder this weekend asking himself this question: is this manager a symbol of the club I want to rebuild?” wrote Carragher.
