The December/January break looked good for Bayern Munich. The Bavarians were in highs spirits at the start of the second part of the season, they easily defeated Hoffenheim 3-0 and with some more signings coming in during the transfer window, things looked great ahead of the home game against Werder Bremen. They couldn’t wish a better opponent at the Allianz Arena. Bremen was without a victory in their last 33 games against Bayern in all competitions, and have lost a remarkable 26 of the previous 27 meetings (last win in 2008, 5-2 In Munich). And contrary to all beliefs, Bremen pulled of a major upset in the middle of Bavaria: Bayern – Werder 0-1. That also meant that Harry Kane failed to score; the Englishman is having a fantastic season so far (26 goals in 23 games in all competitions). He is on course to beat Robert Lewandowski’s single-season league record of 41 goals, but today he missed one. Even Joshua Kimmich broke his own record of 14 straight Bundesliga wins over Bremen. And Bayer Leverkusen fans were surely as happy as Werder’s, since they increased their points difference over Bayern to seven points (the Bavarians have one game less). Totally surpassingly, the guest had all the chances in the first half. After a pass from Njinmah, Jens Stage found himself alone in front of Neuer, but the Bayern captain saved it. That was in the 8th minute, and Neuer rescued his team 15 minutes later when he produced a stretching, finger-tipped save after a Weiser shot. Werder even scored in the 28th minute, but VAR saved the hosts, as Stage fouled Musiala in the build-up to the goal. 😖 Bayern Munich have today lost a home league game to Werder Bremen for the first time since September 2008⏪ Mesut Ozil and Claudio Pizarro were both on the scoresheet for Werder that day… pic.twitter.com/7NAwq10DUL— WhoScored.com (@WhoScored) January 21, 2024 But in the 60th minute, the guests were finally rewarded for their brave display in Munich when Mitchell Weiser beat Davies before smashing a shot high past Neuer at the near post. Tuchel reacted with three changes so for the last 15 minutes, the Bavarians had no less than six forwards in the starting 11 (Koman, Musiala, Sane, Kane, Tel and Muller), but unfortunately for the German champion, it didn’t help at all and the Bavarians lost all three points at home without scoring a goal.
