The Guardian’s F1 correspondent Giles Richards explains why Lewis Hamilton has decided to make the shock move to join Ferrari in 2025. The 39-year-old has been linked with a potential move to the Scuderia in the past but has repeatedly insisted he would stay with Mercedes, suggesting he would see out his career with his current team. After the shock announcement however, Richards explains how this move is similar to Hamilton’s move from McLaren in 2012, and how he will have looked into the smallest of details to ultimately decide which team can give him a better chance of winning a record eighth world championship.
