There are many problems in Cameroonian football and the Federation president Samuel Eto’o is trying solve them all, but some of them are tied with him personally and his day-to-day involvement in the running of the organization. In the case which happened today, the Cameroonian Federation has suspended no less than 62 players for age fraud! Among them is the current member of the recently finished Africa Cup of Nations. Wilfried Nathan Douala was a surprise call from the now resigned coach Rigobert Song, who ‘found him’ in the domestic league, playing for Victoria United. Apparently, the club’s captain lied about his age (17), and has been disqualified from appearing in the Elite League’s play-off games. It is not yet known how old is he really, but Douala along with other 61 players have been suspended. United’s midfielder was called to the African Cup of Nations, but failed to get any minutes on the field before the Indomitable Lions lost to Nigeria in the Round of 16. It happened already in 2022, when 44 players from eight different clubs were called for a hearing into alleged age or identity cheating, with president Samuel Eto’o keen to solve the problem. Then another incident happened, this time in January 2023, when 21 members of their Under-17 squad were disqualified over the issue. The age fraud problem is not connected only to Cameroon, but more or less to whole Africa, but Eto’o is really pushing to resolve this problem. For example, Cameroon’s Professional Football League (LFPC) sent a letter to FIFA and the African Football Association, demanding Eto’o to be fired in September 2023. LFPC insists that Eto’o helped Victoria United’s promotion, as he is a friend of the club’s president and told him on a leak audio: “Stay calm, we’ll give you your three points and we’ll suspend the referee” It’s interesting that suspended Douala is a captain for Vitoria United. Since becoming president of the Cameroonian Football Federation in December 2021, Eto’o has admitted tax fraud from his Barcelona days and agreed to a suspended prison sentence and an additional fine, and then attacked a YouTuber after the Brazil game against South Korea at the World Cup. He was accused by Henri Njalla Quan, former vice president of the Cameroonian Football Federation of attempting to destroy goalkeeper Andre Onana’s career.
