It’s been almost a year since Bayer Leverkusen suffered their last defeat. It happened on the closing day of the Bundesliga last season when they were defeated 3-0 by Bochum as the host. Since then, Xabi Alonso’s team has been performing wonders. Not only did they bring the club its first Bundesliga title and lead it to the Europa League final, but also because they are unbeatable. There are numerous matches this season where Bayer has shown that they play until literally the last whistle. It’s not easy to remember all the goals the Pharmacists have scored in stoppage time for a draw or a win. It’s as if they’ve found the secret potion for invincibility. And if anyone thought Bochum could be a stumbling block again, they were sorely mistaken. In two matches this season, Bayer’s players have repaid the debt with interest. At the end of last December, they won 4-0 at their stadium, and tonight, away from home, they won 5-0! In a match where they fired off 29 shots. But to be totally honest, the home team helped them. A lot. Passlack got the red card for Bochum for a last-man foul on Nathan Tella after only 15 minutes. Much better and bigger teams failed to to defeat Bayer with 11 players on the field, yet alone the average Bochum. And once they conceded a penalty in the dying seconds of the first half, it was all over. Schick blasted in an Arthur cross with a superb first-touch finish after 41 minutes. Boniface converted a penalty five minutes later after Tella was fouled in the box. Amine Adli, brought on for Schick with 20 minutes remaining, headed in a corner to make it 3-0.
