It’s no surprise to see amateurs in the field at major championships. Yet at the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, just over 10 percent of the field will be amateurs.
Of the 16 amateurs teeing it up this week in North Carolina, only two weren’t on a college golf team this spring. Hiroshi Tai, the 2024 NCAA individual champion from Georgia Tech, is in the field thanks to his victory. Also teeing it up is World No. 1 amateur Gordon Sargent and Neal Shipley, the 2023 U.S. Amateur runner-up who earned low amateur honors at the 2024 Masters.
Vanderbilt is the only college with two players in the field (Sargent, Wells Williams). Sargent was the low amateur in the 2023 U.S. Open.
