How defense won Gor Mahia record 21st FKFPL title

The famous quote by Sir Alex Ferguson, ‘Attack wins you games, defense wins you titles’ couldn’t be truer for Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) champions Gor Mahia. The club, once again dominated the league, making it their 21st title since the club’s inception in 1968.It was also their ninth title since 2013 when they broke an 18-year wait for the title. Since then, they have dominated, sometimes even when not in their best of forms.I am proud of the choice I made in mid-season window, says Gor Mahia wingerOne thing has stood out over those years and most evidently in the just concluded season; the stability and reliability of Gor Mahia’s defense. With the league already retained with 3 matches to the end of the season, one would be tempted to think that Mahia’s season has been marked by scoring many goals but that isn’t the case.Gor Mahia have scored 48 goals in 36 league matches, the highest in the league throughout the season but that was just one goal more than Tusker FC, four more than Kariobangi Sharks who finished at position seven and six more than both Police FC and Nairobi City Stars. In fact, by the time Gor Mahia won the league they had scored 40 goals, two goals less than Tusker FC at 42 goals.Gor Mahia crowned champions of FKF Premier League 🇰🇪 pic.twitter.com/lScB7AREFS— Eric Njiru (@EricNjiiru) June 23, 2024 On the defensive side, this is where there was a big difference between the league leaders and other teams. Overall, Gor Mahia conceded 20 goals.Compared to other teams that scored over 40 goals; Tusker FC conceded 26 goals, Police FC 28 goals, Kariobangi Sharks 34 goals and Nairobi City Stars 39 goals.By the time Gor Mahia won the league, they had only conceded 13 goals in 31 matches with the other seven coming in after they were already declared champions. Within the same period,Tusker FC had conceded 24 goals same as Police FC while Sharks and City Stars had let in 30 goals and 34 goals respectively. This points to the fact that while other teams could match Gor Mahia on the scoring chart, the 21-time league champions won by minimizing the number of goals that they allowed in.##NAJAVA_MECA_8173810##Gor Mahia’s Kevin Omondi won the golden glove, keeping 20 clean sheets in the process. In total, they kept 21 clean sheets. They also won 10 matches with a solitary goal meaning they just needed to score one and trust their defense. While the attacking side of the team won them matches, their defensive line won them the title. Indeed, attack wins you games, defense wins you titles.
