Coach Johnathan McKinstry has disclosed the two main reasons for his departure from Gor Mahia.The soft-spoken tactician has already penned a deal with The Gambia national team and will officially join when his deal with Gor expires at the end of the month. McKinstry joined Gor Mahia two years ago in one of the most difficult moments for the club as the record champions were serving a transfer ban and exit of star players due to financial challenges.##NAJAVA_MECA_8180864##He however defied all odds to win back-to-back league titles and most importantly- restored Gor’s pride and glory.In his first season in charge, the 38 year old, relying on mostly young players from the youth team and a few senior players, won the league on the final day following an emotional 4-1 comeback win against Nairobi City Stars.Gor Mahia hoping to break CAF Champions League group stage jinx next seasonWhen Gor fixed their financial mess and transfer ban was lifted, the club bossed the competition, retaining the title with three matches to spare.Even with all that achievement and opportunity to be in the dugout for a continental game, the Northern Irish man opted to leave Gor Mahia and has since given his two key reasons in an interview with Citizen TV.“The job I was asked to do when I came here has been done. If you look back to July 2022 when I arrived, the team was a shell. I arrived in the most difficult of times, there were days when we had seven or eight players on the training pitch. I was tasked with bringing Gor Mahia back to the top and winning the league and that has already been achieved,” he disclosed.There is light at the end of Kenyan football tunnel, says McKinstryHe went on to reveal why he opted for the job offered by The Gambia.“It is about opportunities for me. Gambia have big aspirations having been to the quarterfinals of African Cup of Nations (AFCON) recently. They want to go further. They have big players, some of whom are going for 30-40m euros, meaning that’s one player who can almost buy the entire FKF Premier League and so for me, it’s just about levels,” he added.The former Uganda Cranes gaffer, meanwhile, insists that he will remain a big fan of Gor.
