It might be more illuminating if you feature three families for whom a day not spending anything is not a challenge (‘I must have saved at least £100!’, 2 July), but a necessity. There are plenty of them to choose from after 14 years of Tory austerity. Or get your three writers to exist for a week on items from their local food bank.

• An example of Milliganesque behaviour (Letters, 2 July) is if a boy writes to you to ask for a singed photograph, and you burn the edges, sign it and send it back, apologising that it got accidentally signed.
