Nick Mwendwa assures FKF elections will be held in October

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) honcho Nick Mwendwa has assured Kenyan football loyalists that the long-awaited federation’s elections will be in October/November 2024.Mwendwa, in his address during the FKF award gala on Friday at a Nairobi hotel, said that the court cases that had been barring the process are now out of the picture. The journey to bring change at the helm of the football governing body in the country was halted in March 2024, as the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was supposed to give the road map to the polls, was stopped through a court order from the Mombasa High Court.##NAJAVA_MECA_8236699##It was the case that had been filed by FKF’s Coast Region National Executive Council (NEC) member Gabriel Mghendi that prompted journalist Milton Nyakundi to seek the order, arguing that until the court ruled on the case, the NEC could not convene an AGM.The case was later withdrawn two weeks ago, hence Mwendwa’s firm assurance.“There are no more court cases; they are over. If you want to continue with the good job that has been going on, start preparing your papers; we meet at the ballot in October,” a confident Mwendwa said.FKF is expected to fast-track the electoral process starting in August, with the calling of the Special General Meeting (SGM) and approval of the electoral board at the top of the agenda.Branch elections are expected to take place at the start or mid-September to pave the way for the national exercise.Mwendwa terms 2023-2024 FKFPL season as best in recent yearsMeanwhile, outgoing Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has advised the federation to fast-track the election process.Speaking during the gala, Ababu, who was chopped from the Cabinet by President William Ruto a week ago despite his arguably impressive show at the Ministry, underscored the need to clear the hurdle of the election.“My parting shot, FKF, the entire fraternity of FKF, you are sitting on a diamond mine. I implore that you make sure that the little issue of holding elections is sorted out. Make sure that the environment is clear and that you run football in a manner that will make Kenya envy when it comes to football in this region.“There is no reason why our players should be finding Tanzania a more attractive league than ours,” he said, adding that he had given guarantees to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that Kenya will not disappoint in hosting the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 as one of his last tasks before exiting the Ministry.FKF National Executive Committee meeting makes first step towards elections in 2024
