Headache for Rainbow bosses as players seek out

Rainbow Football Club’s association with the country’s second tier- the FKF National Super League (NSL) came to an official end on the 25th of July, and in the most disturbing of terms. The team had stayed afloat the entire season and had as a matter of fact outdone themselves as a first time participant. Communicating through their management on Thursday, Rainbow admitted to finding it increasingly difficult to match the financial requirements of the league hence, seeing it advisable to drop down to the lesser challenging FKF Division 2. They will henceforth be known as Glorions FC Kenya and play in the eastern Zone of the Division 2. ##NAJAVA_MECA_8235059##It is however fair to note that Rainbow had, towards the closing stages of the 2023/24 NSL campaign, shown signs of financial strain, some of which unceremoniously made it to the social spaces. Boasting quality players within their ranks, the club now will seemingly have to face another challenge of recruiting newer faces as an imminent exodus lies in wait. Players thrown into disarray and young, in dire need to play at the top level. Brian Wepo, a former junior international, headed to Rainbow for a brief stint of rediscovering his form that once sprung him to the junior national team colours and having done just that, hopes he can find a way up. ‘’It’s sad the way things ended when we had just had what I might term a fair season. Things could have been handled differently I think, but when it comes to matters finances, plenty of teams go through the same,’’ says the utility full-back. Rainbow FC reveal reasons for exiting National Super League after rebrandingWepo, had just, returned to his boyhood club Nzoia Sugar FC for the first leg of the 2023/24 FKF Premier League season when the Rainbow management summoned him to come and fit in. This he thinks he did well. ‘’Most of the technical bench coaches are people I had played under before so it was not hard fitting in. Overall, I think we did well as a team and I am proud of my contribution in the matches that I was called upon to deliver,’’ he continues. The lad, who helped KCB finish second in the premier league during the 2021/22 season, now considers outside options as Rainbow grapples to hold onto its key players for next season’s Division two. Having already tasted top flight football with Nzoia Sugar, KCB, and Sofapaka, all top teams, he doesn’t rule. A move out abroad. ‘’At the moment all I can say is anything can happen. Another team in the premier league, a chance at a move out of the country- anything. The latter though, would be really welcome because that is the one box I haven’t ticked yet,’’ he adds. Michael Olunga Football Academy set to acquire Rainbow FC in merger dealRainbow did wither through some player unrest as the season geared to a close and a proper overhaul of the unit is not cannot be overruled. The club’s NSL slot will now be taken by another fast-rising Michael Olunga Foundation (MOFA) FC who, in their quest to earn promotion from the Division Two, fell at the very last stage to Fortune Sacco FC in the play-offs. The club is sponsored by the Kenya national team skipper Michael Olunga.
