Tough electoral code likely to lock candidates out of FKF polls

As Football Kenya Federation (FKF) prepares to hold its general meeting on August 24, the proposed electoral code, that will be used to guide the process, is likely to prove challenging for some candidates going for the top position. The code that was used in the 2020 elections was challenged at the Sports Tribunal before it was eventually approved.Among the clauses that may prove problematic for some candidates going for the president’s post is the requirement that they have been in active football for three of the last four years.Article 2(a) of the code says: “Candidates for the office of President and Vice-President shall have been in active football (registered as a NEC member, committee member, referee, assistant referee, coach trainer, and any other person responsible for technical, medical, or administrative matters in FKF, League, or Club, or as a player for three of the last four years before being proposed as a candidate).”##NAJAVA_MECA_8262758##Former Kenyan international Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, who has declared his intention to go for the top seat, will not qualify to contest if the code is strictly adhered to.Owino, who has been living in the United States of America (USA) for the last 20 years, has not held any of the positions prescribed in the above code.It also remains to be seen whether Hussein Mohammed, a top contender for the president’s post, will qualify as well. Football Kenya Federation reveals Special General Meeting date amid election preparationsPrior to an aborted Annual General Meeting (AGM) that was to be held in March, FKF had barred Mohammed from participating in the meeting, insisting that he was not a member of the federation.Mohammed had been proposed by Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) side Muranga Seal, where he serves as vice chairman, to attend the aborted meeting. At the time, FKF argued that he had not appeared on the club’s register, which had been submitted for club licensing. But Mozzart Sport understands that this has been rectified. An insider in FKF, however, insists that Mohamed will not be allowed to contest. “He does not qualify according to the code, and we cannot allow non-members to contest in our elections,” said an insider who sought anonymity.Kenyan midfielder reveals differences between Kenyan and Tanzanian leaguesOther requirements include the presentation of declarations of support from at least five of the seventy-eight eligible voters.Candidates must also be cleared by various state bodies.
