When Brest finished third in Ligue 1 last season, it was a big surprise. The club from the French port will play in the Champions League this season, and on the opening they they had a great opportunity to show to the football fans around France that their success wasn’t a fluke. Many believe that it was the bad season of other big clubs led Brest to the thrid place and today they had a chance to deny them. But the opposite happened. Big Marseille came to town with new coach Roberto De Zerbi and with his rewamped team and crushed them to pieces: Brest – Marseille 1-5.It seemed it took less than a month for Marseille to “click” under the command of their new coach and with a new leader on the field, as the team from the “Vélodrome” demolished a team with the squad almost intacked from the last season, and with a third-year coach at the helm. Today’s Olympique’s performance looked powerful, explosive, and above all, impressive. Statistically speaking, Brest wasn’t that much worse, but unlike their guests, they couldn’t capitalize on their chances. It took Mason Greenwood only three minutes to put Marseille ahead with an assist from Harit, and the game might have taken a different turn if the home team had converted a penalty in the 9th minute. When De Castillo missed, the punishment for Brest was brutal, as by the 32nd minute, after goals from Luis Henrique and Greenwood (from a penalty), Roberto De Zerbi’s team had taken a big three-goal lead.Even the lifeline that Kamara gave the team in red in the last minute of the first half didn’t faze Marseille. The visitors started the second half just as hungry for goals and good play, with Luis Enrique restoring the three-goal lead for the blue-and-whites in the 48th minute, and Wahi made it an enormous 5-1 for De Zerbi’s team with another penalty. That penalty was won by Greenwood, giving the English star an incredibly impressive debut in Ligue 1 with his new club. But the Englishman decided not to score a hat-trick on his debut but allowed Wahi to score his maiden goal in Marseille’s jersey. The pace of the match significantly slowed down after the fifth goal and the game was ended with jeers from the away fans and Marseille players.LIGUE 1 – MATCHDAY 1Friday Le Havre – PSG 1-4 (0-1)/Lloris 48 – Kang-In 3, Dembele, Barcola, Kolo Muani 90 pen/Saturday Brest – Olympique Marseille 1-5 (1-3)/Camara 45+6 – Greenwood 3, 31 (pen), Henrique 26, 48 Wahi 69(pen)/20.00: (3.40) Reims (3.50) Lille (2.25)22.00: (1.53) Monaco (4.20) Saint-Etienne (6.25)Sunday 16.00: (3.10) Auxerre (3.20) Nice (2.40)18.00: (5.60) Angers (3.70) Lens (1.65)18.00: (2.10) Montpellier (3.50) Strasbourg (3.80)18.00: (2.15) Toulouse (3.35) Nantes (3.80)21.45: (2.40) Rennes (3.50) Olympique Lyon (3.10)***odds are subject to change***
