OPINION: Dear clubs, don’t allow Gor Mahia to turn FKFPL into a farmers’ league

‘The league is defending itself’. That has been an infamous phrase used by Gor Mahia fans for the past few seasons to signify how easy it is for them to win the Football Kenya Federation Premier League. This has largely been true considering the manner in which they stroll to the Premier League title even when they seem to have a weaker squad on paper compared to other teams chasing the league. Some teams that should also ideally be competing and challenging for the title have chosen to be content with a top five or mid-table finish.Former Harambee Stars defender sets up foundation to nurture upcoming footballersLast season, for instance, they won the league with three matches to go. This shows how the league lacked competitiveness in the country’s top tier. It should not be that “easy” to win the league. They did so with a squad comprised of largely fairly young players with the heart of defense marshalled by Joshua Onyango and Sylvester Owino. In fact, before Gor Mahia were declared winners, they had only conceded 13 league goals in 31 matches. The other seven were soaked in after they were confirmed to have won the league.##NAJAVA_MECA_8291076##Tusker FC who finished second on the log had a slow start to the season and could not catch up with Gor Mahia by the time they picked form in the second leg.The major undoing for Tusker over the past few years has arguably been the huge turnover of players at the club which means that they are always rebuilding the team after every transfer window.League moneybags Kenya Police FC on the other hand were nothing short of disappointing. With by far the best squad on paper, full of international players, they were so inconsistent that they appointed three tacticians by the end of the season. All FKF Premier League weekend matches preview ahead of new seasonWith the kind of players at their disposal, observers expect the Law Enforcers to be winning games with ease at least to show for the talent and the money pumped into the team so far.At least for them though, they salvaged their season by winning the Mozzart Bet Cup and therefore earned themselves a ticket to represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup.The situation was actually worse in the 2022/2023 season when Gor Mahia won the league on the final day.##NAJAVA_MECA_8284382##While it was exciting to have the league go down to the wire and the emotional comeback by K’Ogalo in the second half, even the most ardent of the team’s faithful could not have put his money on the club to win the league at the beginning of the season. The team was on a transfer ban and also grappling with the exodus of key players and therefore had to rely on largely young players and those promoted from the youth team.In fact, most of their games in the season were marked by a low attendance from fans with the numbers increasing when they realized they had a realistic chance of winning the league.FKF promise not to lock out any eligible candidate from contesting in upcoming electionsTusker and Police were once again their closest competitors with the others looking content with just being participants. It is concerning that Kenyan giants AFC Leopards are now going into their 27th year without a league title. For a team with one of the largest followers in the land, their fans and management should not be content. They must come up with a way of dislodging their arch-rivals from the top. How sweet would the league be if Leopards finally won it? Who says it can not happen this season?##NAJAVA_MECA_8284392##What became of KCB FC? What of Bandari FC? With the financial stability of those clubs, they should be challenging for the title year in, year out.KCB have no reason as to why they can not win the league. However, the short-term contracts majorly lasting one year offered to their players and members of the technical bench do not signify a team with the intention of bagging the league. No one knows why Bandari does not win the league back-to-back when they are arguably the most stable team in the league.FKF Premier League clubs must therefore give Gor Mahia a run for their money. They must make it difficult for them to win the league again. We will hit them hard- How Gor Mahia are plotting for El Merreikh’s fallIn all honesty, they should actually not be allowed to win the 2024/2025 season and turn the league into a farmers’ league this season.
