When Danny Welbeck scored his 100th goal for Brighton (and fifth against his old club), Manchester United fans who follow the sports science and stats were shaking their head since their club won just one of their last 24 away Premier League matches when conceded first (D3 L20), beating Everton 2-1 in October 2022. And that ‘tradition’ was not broken by the Red Devils today, as they lost in injury time against the Seagulls: Brighton – Manchester United 2-1. Apart from the old boy Welbeck, two young Ivorians were prominent in today’s game. While Amad Diallo brought a much-needed draw for United, his colleague Simon Adinga was the one who assisted Joao Pedro for the winning goal in the 95th minute.Danny Welbeck is the first former Manchester United player to score five Premier League goals against them. The home team was definitely better and got their revenge for the 2-0 defeat by Manchester at this same stadium last season. But the victory came in the last seconds of the match when Adinga assisted Pedro. United had their chances and even got one goal disallowed due to offside, but they failed to resist Brighton’s pressure. Manchester United’s first (and biggest) chance happened after only 10 minutes. Dalot came from the left flank and crossed a beautiful ball on his weaker left foot, but Amad missed a volley from close range. In fact, both teams struggled to find the right pass in the final third, and until the goal, the match was not a quality one. Just after half an hour of the game, Brighton’s veteran Welbeck scored his 100th goal for the Seagulls. Joao Pedro played in a teasing cross towards the back post, and Mitoma’s cross found unmarked Welbeck in the middle of the goal area. A simple tap-in, 1-0 for the home team. Quickly after the break, the Seagulls had an opportunity to double the lead, but Dalot made a goal-line clearance after Milner’s shot. Then Welbeck had an opportunity for a brace against his own club, but his header crashed off the bar, and Maguire dealt with the rest. The punishment came minutes after, when Ivory Coast international Diallo managed to equalize. United quickly took the lead, but Garnacho’s goal was disallowed by VAR due to an offside by Zirkzee, who was sliding towards the goal and couldn’t stop in time to avoid the ball. And when everybody thought that 1-1 would be the final score, the Brazilian Pedro managed to sneak one in for a sweet victory.
