McKinstry records his second defeat as The Gambia coach

Johnny McKinstry had a successful two-year spell at Gor Mahia, winning two titles in a diffcult moment for the Kenya’s giant. The Gambia selection was his next challenge, but so far, with little success. The Irish tactician failed to record a much needed win at home against Tunisia in the AFCON qualifiers and lost his second game in charge: The Gambia – Tunisia 1-2.⚽️ Ali Sowe | Gambia 1-1 Tunisia pic.twitter.com/FPgA6fzQ01— Goals Xtra (@GoalsXtra) September 8, 2024 In three games in charge of the Scorpions, McKinstry managed one win, one draw and one loss, but now he has two defeats on his account. Looking at today’s game, the Tunisia match was winnable, considering that the Irish coach has a solid team, with experienced players like Omar Colley (Sampdoria, Besiktas, PAOK), or exciting forwards like Musa Barrow (Bologna, Atalanta, Al-Taawoun) and Yakuba Minteh (Newcastle, Brighton). But, his men allowed the guests to use most of their chances and turn them into two goals, enough for the win. With this defeat, the Scorpions are now left with one point in two games in Group A and travel to Madagascar in October in an attempt to secure their first win in this AFCON qualifiers.tunisia first goal pic.twitter.com/l9KAZEHHZ8— game over (@gameove35766706) September 8, 2024 Gambia 1-2 TunisiaBen Romdhane goal(🎥 Azamsports 1) pic.twitter.com/rF4plOyWwC— Richard Futbal (@richardfutbal) September 8, 2024 McKinstry failed to capitalize on the presence of Minteh and Barrow in the team as the duo was not as good as advertized. The young Brighton forward was nowhere near his form in the Premier League and that must change for the Scorpions. The first chance of the game turned into a goal, when Romdhane took a beautiful free kick, but Sibi’s fantastic reaction was not enough because his rebound came to Abdi who scored in 11th minute. Ali Sowe equalized after Minteh done most of the job in the penalty area, but that was it from the home team, apart from some half-chances. Tunisia was better in the second half and used one opportunity in the 75th minute, when Romdhane secured the winner. There is no VAR in the AFCON qualifying matches, and that’s a shame, since both Gambia and Tunisia’s second goal might have been nullified due to offside. ##NAJAVA_MECA_8322977##
