Olunga admits watching AFCON qualifiers from sidelines was tough

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has admitted it was difficult to watch from the sidelines as Kenya faced Zimbabwe and Namibia in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers earlier this month, after an injury ruled him out of the matches.Kenya had hoped to have Olunga back ahead of schedule, but his recovery wasn’t complete, forcing coach Engin Firat to work with the available players. In the 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe, Firat opted to play without a recognized striker before fielding Jonah Ayunga and John Avire in the 2-1 win over Namibia.##NAJAVA_MECA_8350703##Coach Firat acknowledged that losing Olunga was a major challenge going into the games, and for the player, watching instead of contributing was equally tough.“It was definitely hard for me to watch from the sidelines because I always want to help my team as much as possible,” Olunga told Telecom AsiaSport. He revealed that despite his efforts to be fit in time for the matches, medical clearance didn’t come through. Still, he expressed satisfaction with Kenya’s results, as they now sit atop Group A with four points.“We worked hard with the medical team to try and get me ready, but it was impossible. I’m happy with the team’s results, though, and we’re in a good position going into next month.”Date and time of crucial Junior Starlets friendlies ahead of World Cup debutOlunga has featured in his club’s last two matches, scoring on Saturday, and says his recovery is progressing well. Now, his focus is on rebuilding his fitness.“I feel much better and relieved to be back. Now it’s about regaining my fitness and ensuring I’m physically ready,” Olunga added.Next month, Kenya faces a crucial double-header against Cameroon, which could determine their path to next year’s AFCON in Morocco. Olunga acknowledges the challenge but believes the team can rise to the occasion.“It’s going to be tough, but I believe we can achieve something special. I’ve seen the hard work the boys put in during the first two games, and we’re in a strong position. With the right mindset, we can fight for positive results.”The two teams in each group will grace next year’s AFCON in Morocco.Joseph Okumu doubtful for Harambee Stars back to back games against Cameroon
