Goals and political messages. That would be the shortest possible summary of the Champions League game between Borussia Dortmund and Celtic. A thrashing rarely seen in recent years took place in Germany. Borussia filled Celtic’s net winning 7-1 as the Scottish team was not an equal competitor. The visitors were lucky that the Millionaires, after scoring five goals in the first half, seemed to ease off a bit. Karim Adeyemi played a brilliant game, perhaps the best of his career, scoring three goals. His second goal in the 29th minute was particularly impressive. Serhou Guirassy scored twice against Celtic, while Emre Can and Felix Nmecha each added one. Celtic managed only two shots on target in the entire 90 minutes.3 – Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi is the second German player to score three goals in the first half of a Champions League match after Mario Gomez in November 2011 against Napoli (for Bayern). Furious. pic.twitter.com/rLxyXwyzJI— OptaFranz (@OptaFranz) October 1, 2024 The action on the field was exciting, but the stands were no less eventful, where fans directed criticism at UEFA from the largest fan stand in the world, the ‘Yellow Wall‘. The Borussia faithfull made their stance on the new Champions League format clear, displaying a huge banner: “UEFA MAFIA.” Below, it read: “You don’t care about the sport – all you care about is money!”. Needless to say, there will be sanctions against the club, due to these banners.Celtic came into the match boasting a 100 percent record in Scotland and Europe this season, but were blown off the park in Germany, Dortmund leading 5-1 at half-time. By then, Emre Can had opened the scoring from the penalty spot while Adeyemi had already scored three goals and had won another spot kick, converted by Serhou Guirassy. Adeyemi was a constant threat for the home side, popping up all over the pitch to bamboozle the Celtic defense. The Germany forward was subbed off three minutes into the second half but Guirassy scored an excellent solo goal and Felix Nmecha netted a late strike. The victory equaled Dortmund’s biggest ever Champions League win while leaving Celtic’s ambitions of impressing on the European stage in tatters. Domestic league champions in 12 of the past 13 seasons, the European stage has long been the true test of Celtic’s quality — and it has often sent them crashing back to earth.UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – MATCHDAY 2TuesdaySalzburg – Brest 0-4 (0-1)/Sima 24, 70, Camara 66, Lage 76/Stuttgart – Sparta Praha 1-1 (1-1)/Millot 7 – Kairinen 32/Leverkusen – Milan 1-0 (0-0)/Boniface 51/Dortmund – Celtic 7-1 (5-1)/Can 8 pen, Adeyemi 11, 29, 42, Guirassy 40 pen, Nmecha 79 – Maeda 9/Barcelona – Young Boys 5-0 (3-0)/Lewandowski 8,51, Raphinha 34, Martinez 37, Camara 81 og/Inter – Crvena Zvezda 4-0 (1-0)/Calhanoglu 11, Arnautovic 59, Martinez 71, Taremi 81 pen/Arsenal – PSG 2-0 (2-0)/Havertz 20, Saka 35/Slovan B. – Man.City 0-4 (0-2)/Gundogan 8, Foden 15, Haaland 58, Mcatee 74/PSV – Sporting 1-1 (1-0)/Schouten 15 – Braganca 83/Wednesday19:45: (2.10) Girona (3.60) Feyenoord (3.60)19:45: (5.30) Shakhtar (3.60) Atalanta (1.70)22:00: (5.30) Dinamo Zagreb (3.60) Monaco (1.70)22:00: (6.00) Lille (4.10) Real Madrid (1.55)22:00: (3.00) Benfica (3.45) Atl.Madrid (2.50)22:00: (4.60) Aston Villa (3.80) Bayern (1.75)22:00: (2.40) RB Leipzig (3.45) Juventus (3.15)22:00: (1.20) Liverpool (6.75) Bologna (14.0)22:00: (2.80) Sturm (3.40) Club Brugge (2.65)***odds are subject to change***
