Why former Harambee Starlets tactician wants Gor Mahia to stick to Zico as head coach

Former Harambee Starlets head coach Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor is convinced that Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno is qualified and experienced enough to handle record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia on a long-term deal. Zico has been coaching Gor for the past three weeks albeit on an interim basis following the sacking of Brazilian head coach Leonardo Martins Neiva. Before Neiva was shown the door, Zico served as the first assistant coach at the club with Michael Nam being the second assistant. ##NAJAVA_MECA_8547744##Oduor, who worked with Zico at KCB FC for four seasons, labelled him as one of the best local coaches, who possesses what it takes to lead the most successful football club in the country. The former Nzoia Sugar FC head coach said the positive results K’Ogalo have realised in the two matches Zico has been in charge is an indication that the former Sofapaka boss is equal to the task. He counselled the Gor office to save money by shelving the plan to hire a new coach and instead give Zico a full mandate and better terms. ##NAJAVA_MECA_8547569##”I do not see a reason why Gor Mahia should waste resources in hiring a new coach. Zico is equal to the task. They should confirm him as the new coach and afford him the support as they do with foreign tacticians,” said Oduor. Gor Mahia spell out four conditions for hiring a local coachOduor, who currently serves as an assistant coach at South Sudanese side Jamus FC, tipped Zico to deliver the 22nd league title and the elusive Mozzart Bet Cup if he finds favour from the management. Gor will be seeking to retain their league title and lay hands on the Cup they last won in the 2020-2021 season under Portuguese coach Manuel Vaz Pinto. “I am not surprised with the way he has started life at Gor. He is a good manager, who knows how to get the best from his players. I am sure he will deliver double success if confirmed as head coach,” Solo rooted for his former boss. Millions being dished out by FKF presidential candidates ahead of electionsAt the same time, the former Kibera Black Stars coach termed Zico as the right man to take Gor to the promised land in the CAF Champions League. Despite their regular appearances and being considered one of the East African giants, Gor have never made it to the group stages of the tournament. “He is very ambitious and wants to compete in the biggest tournament on the continent. If he is supported, he will easily take the team to new continental heights,” added the former Nzoia Sugar coach.
