Borussia Dortmund is having a terrible season so far…in Bundesliga. The German giants are currently in 11th position and qualifications for the Champions League are now looking so unreal. But their current campaign in the UEFA‘s premier competition is looking good. They have qualified for the next phase and had to play against Sporting in the playoffs. Before and after the first game, which BVB won 3-0 in Lisbon, the German team lost two games in Bundesliga. So when the loyal fans flocked again for the rematch against Sporting, they at least wanted 90 minutes of passion, goal and a victory. The got none, as Dortmund somehow managed to transfer their bad Bundesliga displays in the Champions League as well – Borussia – Sporting 0-0.Rui Silva saves Serhou Guirassy ‘s penalty kick pic.twitter.com/yXlmbofwNl— Goals Xtra (@GoalsXtra) February 19, 2025 Dortmund have only lost one of their last 14 home matches in the Champions League – this season’s league phase defeat to Barcelona (3-2) and they avoided defeat tonight as well, but only because Sporting totally gave up even before the game started. The Portuguese giant is struggling in the domestic league and after a 3-0 loss at home, coach Rui Borges decided to leave out both star striker Viktor Gyokeres and creative winger Francisco Trincao at home. This cowardly act helped Borussia as Sporting had one shot on target during 90 minutes (in the 85th minute). Still, the home team is in such a psychological crisis, that they didn‘t use this and ended the game without a goal. The level of their attacking performance can be easily be described with the one data – their first chance from open play happened in the 68th minute. This atmosphere > pic.twitter.com/RhciQ2AhkS— Borussia Dortmund (@BlackYellow) February 19, 2025 BVB had a bigger opportunity minutes later, when Karim Adeyemi was tripped inside the penalty area, but Guinea star Guirassy missed the penalty (it was a goalkeeper save) in the 58th minute. Coach Niko Kovač seemed to have given up on the result at that point either and with 30 minutes to play, he took out both Guirassy and Julian Brant in order to keep them fresh for the Bundesliga games. Givanni Reyna came in and created the best opportunity of the game in the first attack. He broke in the front of the goalkeeper but his shot hit the post. The Borussia winger shook things up, but in the end it wasn‘t enough for at least a goal. Captain Emre Can shook the net after Reyna‘s cross in the 73rd minute, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. And that was all from this boring game, which the fans probably already forgot by the time they came home from the stadium.UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – PLAYOFFSReturn legTuesdayMilan – Feyenoord 1-1 (0-1)/Gimenez 1 – Carranza 73/Feyenoord win 2-1 on aggAtalanta – Club Brugge 1-3 (0-3)/Talbi 3, 27, Jutgla 45+3 – Lookman 46/Brugge win 5-2 on aggBayern – Celtic 1-1 (0-0)/Kuhn 63 – Davies 90+4/Bayern win 3-2 on aggBenfica – Monaco 3-3 (1-1)/Akturkoglu 22, Pavlidis 76 pen, Kokcu 84 – Minamino 32, Ben Seghir 51, Ilenikhena 81/Benfica win 4-3 on aggWednesday Dortmund – Sporting 0-023.00: (1.18) PSG (7.25) Brest (15.0)23.00: (2.30) PSV (3.45) Juventus (3.05)23.00: (1.85) Real Madrid (3.80) Man.City (4.00)***odds are subject to change***
