Greenwood’s brace calms the storm in Marseille

Although it didn‘t look like that, two clubs with a lot of problems met tonight in Ligue 1. Situation with Montpellier is clear – the club which won the title in 2012 with Olivier Giroud leading the attack will be relegated on it‘s 50th anniversary in a matter of weeks (depending on other results) and nobody expected the team with only four wins so far to put any challenge against Olympique. But with Marseille is different. The biggest club in France got a new coach in August 2024 and spent a lot of money on new players in order to reach the Champions League next season, but with stunning five defeats from the last seven league games, Roberto De Zerbi is feeling the heat. The Italian coach apparently had a row with his players and now the French media reported that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Adrien Rabot refused to play with Mason Greenwood.Brace + 18 goals this season for Mason Greenwood ⚽️ pic.twitter.com/dCnoIlgYJO— Ligue 1 English (@Ligue1_ENG) April 19, 2025 Sporting director Medhi Benatia had to come out do deny those rumors but also said clearly that the club will be in deep trouble if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. So De Zerbi was under pressure ahead of this game as all three points were expected by definition. And yet, after first 45 minutes against dead-last Montpellier, the score was only 1-0 and the penalty converted by Greenwood was the only chance in the game. The game ended 5-1 for Marseille as the guests are terrible and it‘s impossible not to score against them, but De Zerbi needs to lift the form of his players as soon as possible. Monaco and Lyon are chasing Marseille and those three clubs are fighting for the second and third position which lead directly to the Champions League. Out of those three clubs, Marseille has the toughest schedule as they are playing against Brest, Lille and Rennes among others.Marseille fans with a banner for Mason Greenwood and Luis Henrique:”Greenwood, Henrique, get a move on!”📸 @georgeboxall22 pic.twitter.com/u6do3RVqVa— Get French Football News (@GFFN) April 19, 2025 Despite reports, all three men (Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Adrien Rabot and Mason Greenwood) played in the starting 11 and two of them scored. Greenwood appeared on the scoresheet again in the 67th minute, while Rowe and Rabot added one goal apiece. Unlucky Bille scored an own goal in the 60th minute and another heavy defeat for unfortunate Montpellier.LIGUE 1 – MATCHDAY 30FridayRennes – Nantes 2-1 (1-0)/Truffert 23, Meite 86 – Mohamed 54/SaturdayPSG – Le Havre 2-1 (1-0)/Doue 8, Ramos 50 – Soumare 60/Monaco – Strasbourg 0-0Olympique Marseille – Montpellier 5-1 (1-0)/Greenwood 8(pen) 67, Bille (og) 60, Rowe 74, Rabiot 90 – Davin 83/Sunday16:00: (1.53) Lille (4.20) Auxerre (7.50)18:15: (2.35) Brest (3.40) Lens (3.00)18:15: (1.40) Nice (5.00) Angers (9.00)18:15: (3.40) Reims (3.30) Toulouse (2.30)21:45: (5.00) Saint-Etienne (3.90) Olympique Lyon (1.67)***odds are subject to change***
