Maybe getting knocked out of the Champions League — in heroic fashion, with a win over Barcelona in the return leg (3–1) — will actually turn out to be a blessing for Borussia Dortmund. The only question is: did it come too late? The Black and Yellows have managed to stabilize their form and string together a few good domestic results, but they’re still trailing in the race for another Champions League qualification. Had Dortmund slipped up at home today against Borussia Monchengladbach, those dreams would have been extinguished. But thanks to a win over their namesake, the club from Signal Iduna Park stays in the hunt for the fourth spot: 3–2. You can check the goals HERE. The drip is immaculate. pic.twitter.com/AmxOlTrkGQ— Borussia Dortmund (@BlackYellow) April 20, 2025 It’s been nine years since Dortmund last missed out on the Champions League and another miss would be a heavy blow for the Yellow-Blacks. Interestingly, they had some notable opponents on their run to the Europa League quarterfinals back in 2015/16: Porto in the Round of 32, then Tottenham, before being knocked out by Liverpool — it almost felt like a Champions League campaign…If Dortmund could have chosen an opponent for today’s must-win match, they probably wouldn’t have picked anyone else. Monchengladbach is their favorite guest. The Foals have been on an abysmal run when visiting what used to be Westfalenstadion. Including today’s match, they’ve only won one of their last 19 visits to Dortmund! And that lone win came 11 years ago.Serhou Guirassy – Barca’s nightmare and African beastCoach Niko Kovač liked how Dortmund played in the return leg against Barcelona, so he fielded the same starting eleven. But it took them a while to get going. Monchengladbach were under pressure, yet they converted their first real chance into a goal — with a bit of luck. Itakura danced through four defenders, and a clumsy touch from Bensebaini turned into an unintended assist for the Japanese player, who didn’t waste the opportunity. In full force 👏 pic.twitter.com/UgZSGokhq7— Borussia Dortmund (@BlackYellow) April 20, 2025 Dortmund couldn’t find a way to the net for most of the half — until the last five minutes. Then the floodgates opened, literally and figuratively, as the skies over the city poured rain and goals. In just six minutes, Kovač’s side scored three goals: Guirassy equalized in the 41st minute, Nmecha turned it around shortly after, and Svensson made it 3–1 right before halftime. Still, Dortmund is the kind of club that never lets a match become boring — you never know which way the game will go. Monchengladbach closed the gap in the 56th minute through a Stoger penalty, and the match was back on. The Foals tried to push for more, but couldn’t make it happen. In fact, Dortmund came closer to scoring again — especially late on when Brandt found himself one-on-one with the keeper. Instead of shooting, he tried to pass to Guirassy, who was sandwiched between defenders and never even saw the ball, let alone touched it. In the end, smiles at Signal Iduna Park — and hope for a top-four finish is still alive.BUNDESLIGA – MATCHDAY 30SaturdayFreiburg – Hoffenheim 3-2 (2-2)/Doan 36, Holer 28, 57 – Butler 45+2, Kramaric 45+5/Heidenheim – Bayern 0-4 (0-3)/Kane 12, Laimer 19, Koman 36, Kimmich 56/Mainz – Wolfsburg 2-2 (2-1)/Lee 34, Kohr 40 – Arnold 3, Vavro 89/RB Leipzig – Holstein Kiel 1-1 (0-1)/Sesko (p) 74 – Machino 44/Werder – Bochum 1-0 (0-0)/Weiser 80/Union Berlin – Stuttgart 4-4 (4-4)/Leite 19, Querfeld 38, Ilic 45+6, 5 – Undav 23, Millot 29, Chabot 43, Fuhrich 45+1/SundayAugsburg – Eintr.Frankfurt 0-0Dortmund – M’ gladbach 3-2 (3-1)/Guirassy 41, Nmecha 44, Svenssson 45+4 – Itakura 24, Stroger (p) 56/20:30: (5.30) St.Pauli (3.60) Leverkusen (1.70)***odds are subject to change***
