The Bald Mountain course at Rumbling Bald Resort at Lake Lure in western North Carolina – less than an hour by car southeast of Asheville – has undergone a mild restoration and will open April 1 with better playing lines and new turf in run-up areas around the greens.
The tree canopy on the 6,300-yard layout was trimmed back to its original border on several doglegs, and the increased light and air should help tee boxes flourish, including several tees that were re-grassed.
Bald Mountain – one of two courses at the resort, along with Apple Valley by Dan Maples – was designed by W.B. Lewis and opened in 1973. The 16th green at Bald Mountain was the backdrop for a scene in the movie “Dirty Dancing.” The course has five par 5s and five par 3s.
