Fights, traffic lights pulling…the English are in Bilbao

The new and modern San Mames stadium in Bilbao will host the Europa League finalists Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United tonight and all 52,114 seats have been sold out. But there are two problems: around 80.000 fans arrived to Spain and they are all English. The British football fans have been notorious for years and now, with all-English finale, the situation is even worse, as there are massive amount of fans who are already causing problems and we are still hours from the game. The beautiful and sunny Spain is a bate for everyone, yet alone British fans, so many of them didn‘t wait for Wednesday to arrive, but book holidays from Monday and went to other cities as well. And the Spanish media are not happy about it.Aficionados ingleses provocan altercados violentos en la Parte Vieja donostiarra #donostia #sansebastian #EuropaLeagueFinal https://t.co/DFg9dyIXjI pic.twitter.com/2J85lyJkzr— El Diario Vasco (@diariovasco) May 20, 2025 Since the early morning, the Bilbao-based newspaper El Correo reported that Tottenham fans had ‘destroyed two traffic lights’ and had ‘raised them like a trophy’. Several Manchester United fans were reported to have punched another supporter in Plaza Nueva, leading to eight police officers being required to intervene. Tottenham supporters were claimed to have showered rivals with beer in another incident, while one fan was pictured vomiting in the street. Police are out on the streets in full force, but there are only 2000 of them, not a large number considering the number of fan arriving. The losers finalThe biggest incident actually occurred in San Sebastian, a city 100km away from Bilbao, where the both set of fans clashed on the streets of the old town. The English occupied the entire street and began arguing, hitting each other, and throwing objects taken from the various terraces of the Old Town establishments, from glasses, chairs, and tables to trash cans, to use as weapons or throw them at rival fans. “In relation to the incidents arising out of the celebration of the Europa League final we have no information on any serious occurrences. No one has been seriously injured and there have been no arrests so far. It’s true there was a fight in San Sebastian’s Old Town which started for reasons that are still being investigated and which involved the throwing of missiles by two rival groups. But that incident didn’t lead to any arrests“ said the police spokesman. ##NAJAVA_MECA_8939875##
