Sichenje survives ‘pyro bomb’ but loses Serbian Cup final

From the very beginning of the clash, Collins Sichenje was “at war” against the Serbian Super Liga leading scorer, the Senegalese Cherif Ndiaye. The Harambee Stars defender was positioned pretty well throughout the game’s opening half and didn’t let Red Star’s pressure confuse him and affect his focus.Nevertheless, Vojvodina’s defence fell short in the 22nd minute when Bruno Duarte put the Serbian champions in front following a hasty fastbreak. Sichenje superbly blocked the Brazilian’s first effort, but his teammates failed to prevent the striker from scoring from a rebound.Minutes before the break, the 21-year-old centre-back found himself in an odd situation when a “pyro bomb” thrown from the Red Star stand fell and exploded near him. Still, he shortly recovered and continued the game. After the break, Vojvodina started playing more offensively, chasing the leveller but also leaving too much room for Red Star’s counterattacks. Consequently, Sichenje was booked in the 53rd minute for a tackle on Ndiaye, trying to stop the Belgrade crew’s dangerous attack.##EDITORS_CHOICE##In the 66th minute, the team from Novi Sad could have equalized from their best goal-scoring opportunity, but Marko Velickovic’s long-range effort crashed against the bar.Unfortunately, that was Vojvodina last chance to make a comeback, as Red Star managed to triple the lead over the Angolan Felicio Milson and Aleksandar Katai from a free-kick in added time and clinch their fourth consecutive Serbian Cup trophy.Minutes before the end, Sichenje was sent off after another tackle on Ndiaye, though that red card didn’t change the impression of the Kenyan’s decent display.Despite the defeat and the dismissal, Sichenje put in an excellent performance, stopping one of the most lethal strikers in Serbian football, Ndiaye, who scored two goals in this season’s edition of the UEFA Champions League.##NAJAVA_MECA_8939341##
