Kenya Police FC are on the brink of their maiden FKF Premier League title with the top flight resuming this weekend. Just four years in and the law enforcers have, in their cabinet, a domestic cup and what now seems- unless by some cataclysmic hit of ill fortune- a first premier league title. They, however, would not be here today if it wasn’t for the heroics of one Kelvin Mwaura four years ago. Starring in a two-legged promotion playoff match against Vihiga United in 2021, Mwaura helped neutralise the more experienced United side, helping Police climb up.Follow our WhatsApp channel for more newsFour years down the line, the number ten finds himself in a similar position, only this time, he will be seeking to lift Fortune Sacco to the top tier. A series of injuries saw him leave Police FC a season after promotion, and after a short stint with Bidco United, he decided that he would roll back the years in a league he is so familiar with.Osoro, Sakwa relish in dream Harambee Stars show”It was not hard to go back to the NSL. I have been there with Police. It was easy to rejoin Fortune Sacco. It is an ambitious team, and when they told me their plans, I was sold on them and knew it was possible because they were not far off from the top three in the league. It was a familiar territory,” says the quick-footed playmaker.Fortune have, since their promotion into the second tier a few years ago, been falling short in the closing stages of the season each time. Someone with experience in handling pressure was needed, and so Mwaura heeded the call from them.”I brought a lot of experience, composure, and confidence from the top flight. I think the team lacked these because most of the players are still young and have not ventured out yet. I have inspired the team so far, telling the lads that it can be done because I have done it before with Police,” continues.##NAJAVA_MECA_8975319##Fortune Sacco sits third in the 19-team National Super League (NSL) log, three points above their weekend opponents, Darajani Gogo. A superb run of ten games undefeated anchors their confidence ahead of the penultimate showdown. Mwaura, while admitting that they have sailed through fair winds in the season, says the youthful squad also put in the work.”Fortune has been finishing in the top five at least for the period that they have been in the top flight. Finishing the league has always been the problem, but we decided to take each game at a time with strategies and targets. I also think the tide had been in our favour, great momentum that saw us go up to ten games undefeated,’’ he says, adding that the impact of their fans cannot be overlooked. “They (fans) have been immense in pushing us through, especially the home games.’’He does not believe it to be an easy match. Gogo, fresh from victory against SamWest Blackboots, will also be out for blood. They have a realistic chance of making the top three, as only three points separate them from their weekend hosts. Mwaura says they will give the Kibra boys the respect they deserve, but play it like a final, after all, that is all they have done the entire season. From glory to grave: Five Kenyan footballers killed over criminal ties”Gogo is a good team. They are in the top five and have been there throughout the season. It is like any other game for us. We do not have any pressure because they are coming to our backyard. The pressure is actually on them,” Mwaura believes.”Every game is a final for us, and we will do everything for the three points. The fans will be there in large numbers too, and we are psyched up from our last outing, the Majirani derby against 3K FC. The coaches have done their part, and I believe victory will be ours,” Mwaura, whose fleeting appearances have seen him score three times and assist four times in just eight matches, continued. It will be a first, should Fortune Sacco see off their last two matches with maximum points, for the ambitious side to get to the top flight. Backed by a success-hungry office, Mwaura reveals that it will only be fair if they can repay the support of the management by earning promotion. A promotion playoff slot is the minimum.’It doesn’t make sense’ – Athletes question AK’s move to conduct trials in US”Our management has played their role as compared to other teams. Players’ welfare is adequately taken care of. What players need is motivation, and they have done their part in this regard, and we have reciprocated by bringing in the points. For the remaining two matches, we want to reward them with a promotion slot or better. We are hopeful we will be in the Premier League,” concludes a confident Mwaura. They will host Gogo on Saturday, 14 June, from 3 PM at the Kianyanga Stadium in Kerugoya. A final day away trip to Kisumu will then seal the fate of Mwaura and crew. The #FKFNSL Table pic.twitter.com/11F5P70Ba6— FKF NSL (@FKF_NSL) June 9, 2025
