FKF Cup: Pinto pleads with government to allow fans in Mashemeji Derby

After the venue carousel that finally culminated in Nyayo Stadium being selected to host the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup final, Gor Mahia head coach Manuel Vaz Pinto is pleading with the government to allow a fraction of the fans to watch the cup decider.Since Covid-19 hit the country back in March 2020, football fans have been starved off watching games in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly virus. Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Pinto emphasized the importance of having fans in the stadium especially after the club posted poor results at the start of the season.“When I joined Gor Mahia I knew how the fans are important to the club, they are amazing fans and of course when you are in a big club like Gor Mahia and you have these types of fans, you wish to play in front of them,”🟢 | Sunday’s derby means a lot to us and midfielder @KennethMuguna10 has this to say… 👇#Sirkal | #Betsafe pic.twitter.com/hEYBYBYM0J— ⚽️GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) July 2, 2021 “The fans deserve it because they have suffered a lot, it has been a long time since they attended a game, we will see if the government will allow or not but if they come it’s not only good for Gor Mahia but AFC Leopards and Kenyan football,” said Pinto.Gor Mahia still have a chance of representing the country in continental club football should they win the FKF Cup at the expense of eternal rivals AFC Leopards despite currently serving a ban from CAF for failing to settle the payment of former player Dickson Ambundo.Football fans have argued that the government allowed a multitude of spectators to watch the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Naivasha despite fans being banned from sporting activities.🟢 | Captain Shakava speaks….#Sirkal | #Betsafe pic.twitter.com/cOo7uLfsQb— ⚽️GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) July 2, 2021 Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards fans have been asking the government to allow at least 10,000 fans into Nyayo Stadium to watch the Cup final in accordance with the Covid-19 protocols. As things stand fans will be forced to watch the game from the comfort of their homes as has been this season.
