SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Steph and Dell Curry have been playing golf at Edgewood-Tahoe for several years, but this summer, they are joined by Steph’s younger brother, Seth, for the first time.
And they will be able to keep close eyes on each other as the three Currys will play in the same group on Friday morning, teeing off on No. 1 at 2:11 p.m. ET (11:11 a.m. local time).
This is Steph’s ninth time playing in the tournament, the seventh for Dell and the first for Seth.
Steph, who plays guard for the Golden State Warriors, had a couple more weeks to practice his golf game than Seth, who plays guard for the Philadelphia 76ers, whose season ended in mid-June. Dell is a retired NBA player and now TV commentator for the Charlotte Hornets.
They usually to try to play golf together a few times a year, but time is limited due to their basketball schedules.
After their two practice rounds this week, golf will get a little more serious, starting Friday.
“We’ve had fun the first two days. (Friday) it will be each man for their own ball,” Dell said, laughing. “We’ve helped each other out a little bit these first few days. Tomorrow we’ll say good shot when you hit a good shot, but it’s up to you to hit good shots and good putts. Probably won’t be a lot of help.”
Seth said his goal is to not embarrass himself on the course as he tries to get used to playing golf in front a large gallery.
Steph and Dell always make a side bet on who will play better in the ACC, with the loser having to jump in Lake Tahoe, along with other bets. Seth will be part of the bet this week, but they would not reveal what the bet is, yet.
“When we got to the course (Wednesday), one of the first questions (Seth) asked wasn’t about golf, it was where do you guys jump in the lake here,” Dell Curry said.
No Olympics
Steph said choosing to play in the celebrity tournament instead of with Team USA in the Summer Olympics was a hard decision, but came down to numerous factors, including resting both physically and mentally after the NBA season went later in the year than usual.
The U.S. men’s basketball team is training in Las Vegas this week.
“Coming off of this season and the condensed schedule, the protocols and obviously where I’m at in my career, I do value the offseason, and I’m working back on the court, but to try to go and play and there’s just a lot that could happen,” he said. “I respect every single guy that goes and plays that’s out there in Vegas and I wish them all the success and a gold medal to show for it.
“It just wasn’t right for me. And I’m very confident in that decision. No regrets at all. Obviously being here I’m playing golf, having fun with my family. And that’s a personal thing,” he said. “But there’s always that itch to play and play on the biggest stage like the Olympics, but it just wasn’t the right thing for me and the right time.”
He said he has a plan in place for preparing for the next NBA season.
