Ingwe defender vows to fight for spot after getting rare start

AFC Leopards defender Robert Mudenyu has vowed to put up a fight for his spot in the team’s starting eleven after head coach Patrick Aussems entrusted him with a rare start in the three years he has been at the den against Bandari.Since signing for the twelve time champions back in 2019 from Sony Sugar, a series of unending injuries have done little in helping the player fight for a place in the Ingwe backline that was composed of Clyde Senaji, Isaac Kipyegon and Robinson Kamura in that pecking order.CLUB UPDATE The team safely arrived in Thika for our FKF-PL match against @BandariOfficialOchan Benjamin, Senaji Clyde, Hansel Ochieng, Said Tsuma and Oyemba John won’t feature in the match after their contracts endedThe match will be live on @StarTimesKE #INGWE pic.twitter.com/HwjiFCMHKT— AFC Leopards (@AFCLeopards) July 9, 2021 Leading up to the match against Bandari, luck would smile on Mudenyu as the club announced that Senaji was out of contract and thus would not be eligible to feature for the match. Being that former club captain Kamura is also on bad books with the technical bench and is not getting play time, the defender was thrust into the starting line up to hold fort. The player did not disappoint. He grabbed his maiden league goal at the club by scoring the opener and grabbed a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over the coastal side in what was only his fourth appearance this season in twenty three games. Although fortuitous circumstances played a part in the former Sony Sugar man getting a rare outing in the starting lineup, the player only has eyes focused on capitalizing on that performance to keep pushing the agenda to the head coach.“It has been three years and even this season, I have not been getting playing time all through the first half of the season. If you get a rare chance like this, it will be foolish if you do not hold onto the chance and fight for it. I will keep working hard to give the coach a selection headache because I do not want to easily pass up this chance,” he told Mozzart Sport.🥇 Robert Mudenyu 🥇First @AFCLeopards goalSuper performance from the centre back#LeopardsVsBandari #BKPL pic.twitter.com/0KnuSAErxv— Betking Kenya Premier League (@Officialfkfpl) July 9, 2021 In a previous interview, the defender hoped his forced stay out of action will now be a thing of the past.“It has been a long battle with injuries and they have really derailed me, this was my fourth game of the season and maybe if I were fit I would have played more. But I am happy that the injury nightmare is now behind me, I want to enjoy playing more and contributing to the success of the team,” he added.
