CECAFA Kagame Cup: Gor Mahia’s participation in doubt as dates are confirmed

Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed that the 2021 Kagame Cup will take place from August 1 to August 15 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.Kenya’s representative to CAF Champions League Tusker FC have already confirmed their participation in the regional showpiece while Gor Mahia are yet to do so.CAF quarterfinalists in CAF Champions League in the previous season Simba SC have opted not to take part in the tournament with Yanga and first runners up in the previous edition Azam FC representing Tanzania.CECAFA Executive Director Auka Gecheo said that the tournament will be beneficial for the teams as it will help them prepare for CAF assignments that are scheduled to start in September.#TBT 22.7.2019 Champions CECAFA Kagame Cup with KCCA FC in Kigali Rwanda . pic.twitter.com/eOQlBzAmUL— Aminah.B. (@AminahBabirye) July 22, 2021 Gecheo also added that this year’s tournament will feature a guest team from Malawi with Malawi Premier League side Big Bullets FC confirming their participation.“This tournament will help our teams in the region prepare for the CAF competitions that start in September. We shall also have a guest team from Malawi to spice up the tournament,” Gecheo said.The tournament did not take place in 2020 following the unforeseen circumstances brought about by Covid-19 pandemic across the globe, which had an enormous impact on the sporting world.Defending champions KCCA and 2020/2021 Uganda Premier League champions Express FC will represent Uganda while KMKM SC, Altabara FC, Le Messager Ngozi FC, and APR will represent Zanzibar, South Sudan, Burundi, and Rwanda respectively.Teams confirmed for Kagame Cup 2021: Young Africans SC, Azam FC (Tanzania), Altabara FC (South Sudan), Le Messager Ngozi FC (Burundi), APR (Rwanda), Express FC, KCCA FC (Uganda), Tusker FC (Kenya), KMKM SC (Zanzibar), Big Bullets FC (Malawi).
