Mathare United appoint new coach after Ouna departure

Ezekiel ‘Saachi’ Akwana has officially taken over as Mathare United head coach following the departure of Frank Ouna to Musanze of Rwanda.Akwana, a former Mathare United player was one of Akwana’s backroom staff last season and he now takes over from the departing gaffer. He will be assisted by George Midenyo who was Ouna’s assistant last season.The former AFC Leopards and Sofapaka has already reported for duty and last week he conducted close door trials at their training ground, Goan as he seeks to bolster the squad ahead of the new campaign that starts at the end of the month.He comes at a time when the club is at risk of losing some key players due to the nonpayment of salaries. He identified players who he has been watching closely and by next week he will have a list of players who will join the team from the trialists. He is also looking at some established players because we understand that some of our players will leave our team and so we have to ensure that there is no gap left in terms of quality and experience that these players brought to the team,” a source from the Slum Boys’ camp disclosed.Mathare miraculously survived the drop last season and much credit goes to coach Frank Ouna who somehow managed to turn the team’s tides at a time when relegation seemed inevitable.
