Brentford conquers Molineux – Bees sting the Wolves in a physical showdown

Thomas Frank and his boys are doing great since they earned their promotion to the Premier League. Only one defeat in five matches with that win against Arsenal in the season opener. Today, just outside Birmingham, London Bees managed to beat Wolverhampton at Molineux in what was quite a physical match-up. Final score 0-2.On the other end, it has been an awful start of the campaign for the Wolves and their new manager Bruno Lage. One win in five matches – a disappointment to what the fans got accustomed to with Nuno Espirito Santo who went to Tottenham.##EDITORS_CHOICE##Today’s match was not a beauty to watch. A lot of box-to-box battles, interceptions, fouls, few chances and only two goals.Guests imposed as a better team. In the first half, for sure. As soon as the 9th minute, Wolves net shook but it was a disallowed Ivan Toney goal due to offside.Half chances kept coming and eventually Bees took the deserved lead. In the 26th minute Wolves defender Fernando Marcal wrestled down Toney inside the box and Darren England blew his whistle to award Brentford with a penalty. Toney took responsibility and converted the shot confidently.Ivan Toney’s game by numbers vs. Wolves:8 aerial duels contested 7 aerial duels won 6 touches inside the box 5 attempted take-ons 4 fouls suffered3 successful take-ons 3 shots [2 in the box]2 chances created 1 penalty won1 assist 1 goal Outstanding. 🧨 pic.twitter.com/0YQZHcfiIv— Statman Dave (@StatmanDave) September 18, 2021 Toney scored 15 of the 16 penalties he has taken in English league football (excluding play-offs) and all 10 taken for current club Brentford.Just a minute later, Toney had another goal disallowed due to a handball before taking a nifty backheel shot.Wolves showed signs of life shortly after – Adama Traore unleashed a thunderous effort from the edge of the box and the ball crashed off the woodwork in the 32nd minute.Toney continued terrorizing the Wolves and two minutes later assisted for doubling the lead of his team. English striker sent a low ball into the box and Bryan Mbeumo got on the end of the cross to put it into the back of the net. With a goal and assist today, Toney has scored (33) or assisted (11) 44 league goals (excl. play-offs) since joining Brentford in 2020, at least seven more than any other player in England’s top four tiers since the start of last season. As soon as the second-half whistle was heard, a huge opportunity for the Bees. Mbeumo created a good chance for himself after Ruben Neves made a mistake. The Frenchman went for goal from mid-range, but he missed the left post by a whisker. However, bad news for the guests came in the 65th minute when Shandon Baptiste earned his second yellow card after a reckless tackle. What was disturbing for Bruno Lage and the home team supporters is the fact that Wolves failed to take dominance of the match after Brentord collected a red card. Wolves had almost a half-hour numerical advantage and during that time created only one big chance.Chances galore but only a goal each – Saint-Maximin saves Newcastle from defeatAdama Traore fired a cross in the 87th minute, Raul Jimenez caught it but failed to properly control the header and it wizzed narrowly wide of the left post.Visitors almost scored their third in the 90th minute – Mbeumo tried with a shot from the edge of the box but the shot beat the keeper but smashed against the left post.If Bruno Lage does not find a way to get his men out of this start-of-the-season limbo, it will be a nightmare of a season. Eleven shots but none of them were on goal. Frightening fact for the Portuguese colony in the Premier League.PREMIER LEAGUE – ROUND 5FridayNewcastle – Leeds 1-1 (1-1)/Saint-Maximin 44′ – Raphinha 13’/SaturdayWolverhampton – Brentford 0-2 (0-2)/Toney 28′, Mbeumo 34’/17:00: (3.80) Burnley (3.50) Arsenal (2.10)17:00: (1.25) Liverpool (6.75) Crystal Palace (13.0)17:00: (1.18) Man.City (8.00) Southampton (19.0)17:00: (2.35) Norwich (3.25) Watford (3.40)19:30: (2.55) Aston Villa (3.25) Everton (3.05)Sunday16:00: (4.60) West Ham (3.70) Man.Utd.
