Classy midfielders Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Pedro and Felipe Anderson were Lazio’s difference-makers as the sky blues ran out 3-2 winners over Roma in a feisty Derby Della Capitale on Sunday evening.
Once again, Stadio Olimpico was turned into an arena comparable to the famous Colosseum, one of the Italian capital’s best-known sights. Two old rivals battled hard with 22 gladiators cheered by the red-yellow and sky blue sets of supporters.Led by two former Chelsea managers two biggest Roman clubs went for each other’s throat, but this time Lazio came up on top as Maurizio Sarri outsmarted his opposite number Jose Mourinho.
Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and former Roma winger Pedro both hit the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes to give the ‘home’ team the crucial lead – one from which Roma would not recover until the final whistle – and not for the lack of trying.
Roger Ibanez scored a great headed goal following a Jordan Veretout corner just before the break to ensure a close second half and offer the Giallorossi fans hope ahead of the crucial 45 minutes.But their hopes were largely dashed by a sublime solo goal from Brazilian Felipe Anderson just after the hour mark. It was 3-1 at that point and Mourinho’s men were facing a difficult task. Still, they have to be admired for their efforts as they pushed Lazio until the end, scoring a penalty with 20 minutes left and forcing veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina into a few eye-catching saves.
