Even though there might not be any conspicuous fanfare associated with the 90th edition of the Mashemeji Derby, new Gor Mahia head coach Mark Harrison has set his eyes on claiming the scalp of his team’s fierce rivals, AFC Leopards, when he takes charge of his first derby in the league and the country.Fresh from just having to play Sudanese outfit Al-Ahly Merowe in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederations Cup away in Egypt, the team have had to split their attention between the midweek Mashemeji Derby clash and the return leg that takes place on Sunday.⚽| The #MashemejiDerby is here.@AFCLeopards take on @OfficialGMFC in Kasarani.Their last league encounter ended in a 0-0 Draw.Who will win it this time round?#FKFPL pic.twitter.com/4TOnNfIV6y— FKF Premier League (@Officialfkfpl) October 19, 2021 Despite the importance of having to get positive results in both games, with the derby having bragging rights at stake, the pumped Englishman explained the importance of what a win would mean to the K’Ogalo loyal fan base as he urged his side to pick up with their continental momentum and get all three points in the game set for Wednesday at Kasarani Stadium.“Derbies all across the world mean so much to people. I’ve played in derbies as a player and I’ve coached in other derbies as well. I understand the importance of winning this game for everybody involved with the football club and the supporters. We go into the game with a positive mindset and try to get the three points if we can. We have to respect the opposition because we know it is going to be a battle,” the head coach told Mozzart Sport.##NAJAVA_MECA_5912945##After travelling with only seventeen players for their away clash in Egypt, Harrison hinted at rotating his squad in order to maintain fresh levels among the players.“We have a good squad and good depth now. With games coming in thick and fast, I have to do some rotation to try and keep a few players fresh. We have to protect ourselves a little bit so there will be a few changes tomorrow from the team that played in the Confederation Cup,” the head coach added.🟢 | NEXT ASSIGNMENT We continue with our league fixtures as we take on AFC Leopards tomorrow 🏆 – League Match ⚽️ – 🆚️ AFC Leopards 🗓 – Wednesday, October 20📍 – Kasarani stadium 🕒 – Kick-Off: 3pm #Sirkal #Betsafe pic.twitter.com/a1YiXePMQD— GOR MAHIA FC (@OfficialGMFC) October 19, 2021 In what will be the 90th edition of the Mashemeji Derby, Harrison will be hoping to continue Gor’s more than five year unbeaten streak against Ingwe, with their last defeat coming way back in March 2016 in a 0-1 loss. The match on Wednesday kicks off at 1500EAT.
