Jesse Were features as 10-man Zesco United show character to salvage a point

Kenyan international Jesse Jackson Were commanded eighty minutes of playing time when his reigning champions side, Zesco United, showed character and resolve to salvage one point very late into their 1-1 tie against current log leaders, Green Buffaloes, despite being reduced to ten men after a sending off in the first half.Heading into the match played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Were and his Zesco side were looking to build on their 4-0 win registered in their last outing Kasanshi Dynamos where the Kenyan forward grabbed one of the goals.Their interlinked ambition was well on course in the match up until the 39th minute when the first hitch presented itself for Zesco, Dickson Chapa given his marching orders for the team after a reckless challenge on an opponent to ensure the hosts would play the remaining over fifty minutes with a man less. After managing to get to the half time interval with the deadlock yet to be broken, Zesco’s resolute defense was breached in the 53rd minute when Martin Ndhlovu headed in a Buffaloes corner at the near post to give his side the advantage. That goal seemed to have sprung Zesco into life but their sporadic forays forward bore no fruits as a mix of wayward finishing and defensive astuteness from Buffaloes kept them out. Were was one time culpable of failing to restore parity when he placed his header high over the bar when all he needed to do was direct it goalwards. With a man advantage and the clock running down quite fast, Buffaloes thought they would be walking away with easy three points on the day. However with just three minutes left, those plans were sent into disarray as Zesco were handed a penalty and a lifeline after a foul on Spencer Sautu by Gasper Ngulube. Kelvin Kampamba stepped up in the pressure moment and, cool as you like, sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, as he snatched one point for Zesco in the game.
