As the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2021/22 season gets underway on the weekend, Ulinzi Starlets’ skipper Neddy Atieno says the military side is going for nothing short of the league title in their second season in the top tier league.The Joseph Mwanza-coached side, on the weekend, got their season off to a winning start, clinching the inaugural FKF women’s Super-Cup after beating league champions, Thika Queens on post-match penalties.Their victory came barely five weeks after the soldiers beat three-time league champions Vihiga Queens in the inaugural Women’s Cup to lift their first major trophy since joining the top tier league.“This is just the beginning. We knew winning this Cup would give us the momentum and morale for the rest of the season and now that it has happened we are gearing up for the season. The team has improved tremendously since joining the top tier league and this season is even better as the technical bench has reinforced and we have the depth to handle any opponent,” said Atieno.Ulinzi made six new signings ahead of the new season, bringing in Harambee Starlets’ midfield maestro Sheril Angachi who featured as Mwanza’s charges as they beat Thika 9-8 on post-match penalties after a one all draw in regulation time. Also joining the league title hopefuls is Mathare’s Lucy Akoth, the two bringing experience to the young side. We have also received an extra boost by the return of our players who have just graduated from training college. We missed them in the keg of the league but we still managed to win two trophies in their absence. Last season the squad was shaky and when one player was missing, their absence would be felt but now I can sit out a match and still be confident of a win,” added Atieno. Last season, Ulinzi finished third in the zone A league but were eliminated in the playoff quarters of the season run in zonal format. With the 12-team unified league, Mwanza’s charges are looking to go all the way for their first league title.
