CAFWCL: Vihiga Queens bundled out after Rivers Angels humiliation

Kenya’s Vihiga Queens have been bundled out of the ongoing CAF Women Champions League inaugural tournament in Egypt after falling by two goals to Nigeria’s Rivers Angels in their last group match.A brace from Vivian Ikechukwu and a goal apiece from Koku Damilola and Gift Monday were not enough to send the Nigerian team to the semi-final, with the other game in the group ending in a barren draw to see Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR Club proceed in that order. The results were a sharp contrast to the performance of the two teams in the tournament, with Rivers Angels scoring four goals despite having no goal in their last two matches while Queens conceded four despite being defensively superb in the last two matches.Lillian Awuor’s brilliance in the competition stood out in the first half but could not help the three-time Kenyan champions book a slot in the last four.Following a good outing in his first start at the competition against AS FAR Club, Lorna Nyabuto was handed a starting berth as Charles Okere named an unchanged side from the team that beat the Moroccans on Wednesday. And we finally register a goal in this tournament#TheJewelOfRivers#ItsTimeItsNow#TotalEnergiesCAFWCL https://t.co/mpIYBIt4U8 pic.twitter.com/EOYm0jbfJi— Rivers Angels FC (@Rivers_Angels) November 12, 2021 However, the Kenyan international could not last the whole length of the first half, getting substituted with 2 minutes to play before the break for Christine Nafula as Okere sought to add some experience and firepower to his side.Rivers Angels took control in the first half as early as in the third minute when Christopher tried a long-range shot but her effort went wide. The dominance from the Nigerians lasted for the better part of the half, with Vihiga Queens getting some flashes of brilliance but they could not use the windows either.37 minutes into the game, Tereza Engesha had her trademark dribbling on the right side, going past two Angels defenders but her left-footed shot went wide.On resumption, the Angels coach Edwin Okon made a double change, resting Precious Christopher and Cecilia Nku and throwing in the fresh legs of Gift Monday and Maryam Ezenagu in their quest to get at least five goals to be back into contention for a semifinal berth.Okon would make his third change two minutes later, introducing Brigitte Omboudou for Oghenebrume Ikekhua with the game still locked at 0-0.FT#TheJewelOfRivers#ItsTimeItsNow#TotalEnergiesCAFWCL pic.twitter.com/F6DXQeEYEf— Rivers Angels FC (@Rivers_Angels) November 12, 2021 Vivian Ikechukwu scored the first for Angels from the spot in the 67th minute after a Vihiga defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, slotting home perfectly the resultant spot kick. She would double the lead for the Nigerians from the spot just seven minutes later after the custodian Awuor brought down an Angels player, earning a yellow card and giving away a penalty that Ikechukwu would convert with ease. There was no looking back for the Angels, with the semifinal spot on sight as they added the fourth and the fifth in the 80th and in the 84th minute through Koku Domilola and the substitute Monday.Vihiga Queens Starting XI: Lilian Awuor (GK), Enez Mango (C), Joan Nabirye, Janet Bundi, Mercyline Anyango, Tereza Engesha, Phoeby Owiti, Vivian Makokha, Jentrix Shikangwa, Violet Nanjala, Lorna NyabutoRivers Angels Starting XI: Adjei Charlotte, Lolinus Ifeoma, Imuran Rofiat, Deborah Abiodun, Tosin Demehin, Njoki Ugo, Vivian Ikechukwu, Ikekua Oghenebrume, Koku Damilola, Nku Cecilia, Precious ChristopherSubs: Christiana Obiah, Nwabuoku Evelyn, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, Ikenokhwalu Ifeoma, Rose Ekong, Ibubeleye Whyte, Maryann Ezenagu, Catherine Kenneth, Gift Monday, Edafe Mamuzo
