The head of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has expressed increased concern for the welfare of Peng Shuai after a letter purportedly from the Chinese player appeared on state media.

Peng, a former world doubles No 1, has not been heard from since making allegations of sexual assault against a former vice-premier of China in a post on the social media platform Weibo two weeks ago.
