The middle child in a family is oftentimes overlooked, and in many cases the same holds true for irons. The muscleback blades for good players are glamourous and aspirational, while the max-game-improvement club designed for high-handicappers is loaded with technologies to enhance distance and forgiveness. The iron in the middle is an in-betweener, designed to do several things well, but it rarely grabs attention.

For instance, the Mizuno MP-18 SC was a forged shallow-cavity iron for lower- and mid-handicap players who wanted more forgiveness than could be found in the MP-18 MB muscleback blades. Two years ago, the MP-20 MMC was made with a titanium muscleback design that increased the perimeter weighting and stability without increasing the blade length.

For 2022, Mizuno is offering the Mizuno Pro 223, a “middle one” that is ready to take center stage for accomplished players who want the look, control and feel of a blade along with extra distance.
