Arunga working on goalkeeping ahead of Thika clash

Women Premier League (WPL) newbies Bunyore Starlets received a baptism of fire welcome to the top tier league as they lost 6-0 on the weekend to rivals Wadadia Fc and coach Daniel Arunga has his work cut out when his side faces champions Thika Queens on 28 December.Cathy Khaemba’s hat trick and a goal apiece from Faith Atieno, Monica Sungura and Miriam Chelagat handed the hosts the bragging rights and a second-place ranking behind Gaspo Women who played for a similar scoreline away to Kisumu All Starlets.“It was a tough way to get welcomed to the league but we take in stride and work for better in subsequent matches. It was a new environment for most of the players but we had a lengthy talk with them after the match to be sure the result does not deflate their spirits this early in the league. (@beebree0) December 19, 2021 Goalkeeping was our major undoing as we conceded four of the six goals from long ball, some over 30 yards out. It was only in two instances where we were beaten on attack for goals. We had already conceded as early as the fourth minute and that contributed to the lacklustre performance the rest of the match,” offered Arunga. The 2021 division one champions welcome Thika Queens on 28th, a match the tactician describes as an ‘acid test’ for his young side. However, he remains confident they will hold their own against the holders for a positive result. “This week we will be working on our goalkeeping shortcomings. The idea is to sharpen her reflexes and decision making while on goal and we will be good to go. We also suffered a few knocks which I am hoping to have dealt with before the Thika match. Juma confident All Starlets will bounce backWe have reminded the players that they have come up against tough teams before, especially in the Women’s Cup last season and picked wins. We gave Vihiga Queens a run for their money in the quarters and the Thika match should be no different. They will not have it easy,” added Arunga. The WPL title holders are coming off a 2-1 victory against a new-look Kayole Starlets.
