Bevelyne Lungatso, the officer in charge of Kibos Maximum Prison has hit the ground running with the recently launched ‘active participation’ programme in Prisons as she organised an 11-team football tournament at the facility that concluded on Wednesday 29 December. The tournament dubbed ‘Mama Yao Cup’ saw the 11 inmate-teams do battle with Wazee FC emerging victorious after beating Hamaz FC by five goals to one. Tottenham FC completed the podium places’Mama Yao Cup’ is in line with the recently launched rehabilitation, welness,talents and skill development programme in prisons countrywide; aimed at sharpening inmate’s skills, hence aiding in rehabilitation through their active participation.”We held a successful event, a first of many. Having seen, first hand what sports can achieve in the community, I am confident this initiative will bear fruits. The aim is to see an enhancement in inmates’ discipline, general health due to regular exercising and also keeping them busy durinh this period they ate undergoing rehabilitation and giving them a sense of purpose,” said Lungatso. The Kenya Prisons Service, through its farming rehabilitation programme, aims to reintegrate offenders into society by instilling farming and other skills necessary for their self-dependence. Activities like this help them to develop and sharpen their talents and skills that they could use once the rehabilitation process is concluded.”
