Goalkeeping headache for Kitolo as WPL battle heats up

Over the weekend, Zetech Sparks bagged their third win of the Kenya Women’s Premier League (WPL) against Wadadia FC away in Mumias. Despite the 1-2 away victory, coach Bernard Kitolo continues to struggle with his goalkeeping department and is desperate to welcome to his stable a shotstopper who can compliment the talent displayed by the rest of his departments. Against Wadadia, Sparks scored an early goal, in the first minute, through Puren Alukwe and that played a huge role in destabilising an otherwise legal Wadadia. ##EDITORS_CHOICE##The demunitive Miriam Chelagat shot from 40 yards out in the latter stages of the first half and her effort went to the top part of the Zetech goal, leaving Consolata Wanjiku with no reply for the match to head to the breather in a stalemate. On resumption, Spaks made a few changes that injected some speed and urgency upfront but Wadadia’s keeper kept denying the students. The match looked well on its way to the a draw but Violet Akinyi pounced on a loose ball in the box after the Wadadia keeper failed to clear another attempt at goal, scoring in the 92nd minute for the win. “I have one of the best squads in the league I believe but goalkeeping has been our main undoing. We have a good keeper in Wanjiku but teams are exploiting her height to score.  We have been working on it, trying to better her reflexes and ability to reach those balls placed high up. She is slowly getting there but I still need another keeper who will help her as we give Stella Ahono time to recover from her injury,” offered Kitolo. The tactician believes his mid field and defense are doing well but some work need to be done on their finishing. “We have lost several open scoring chances, mistakes that come back to haunt us. As we prepare for a clash against Bunyore Starlets in Nairobi, we will work on that, alongside the goalkeeping as we strive to go up on the log.” added Kitolo.
