Former Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama will be eyeing another silverware at CF Montréal when they take on Mexican side Santos Laguna in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League round of 16, at Estadio Corona in Torreon, Mexico on Wednesday morning. The former Tottenham midfielder ended last season with a trophy after beating FC Toronto in the Canadian Championship (Voyageurs Cup) final in November to lift the title that came with the ticket to continental football.CF Montréal will be returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2020 when they were bundled out in the quarterfinals of the continental showpiece by Honduran side CD Olimpia after losing 2-1, with Wanyama setting up Saphir Taïde for the consolation.Speaking ahead of the game, Montreal’s head coach Wilfred Nancy expressed his delight with the team’s preparation, noting that his side is ready for the challenge.“We are in a different environment, one that’s new to many of us. It’s exciting and we are ready to face this challenge. I’m happy with how preseason went, and we did a lot of interesting things well. The focus is on us. We respect Santos Laguna, and we know they’re a good team, but we want to play the way we want to play,” the tactician said.##EDITORS_CHOICE##This will be the second time that the two sides will be meeting in the knockout phase of the competition, having clashed again in 2009 with Montreal being the casualty then as they were dumped out by Santos Laguna in the quarters.« On arrive dans un environnement qui est différent, qui est nouveau pour nous. C’est excitant et on est prêt à relever ce défi. » – Wilfried Nancy >>> https://t.co/bmoIQXWpltMontreal gets set to kick off @TheChampions against @ClubSantosEn >>> https://t.co/FeqhGlhkBP#CFMTL pic.twitter.com/KbqwMrGNQ0— CF Montréal (@cfmontreal) February 15, 2022 Nancy believes that the game in 2009 has great significance to the club and will help push Wanyama and Montreal to give their best in this encounter.“I haven’t spoken of that game with some of our alumni in a while, but I’ve spoken about it many times because I lived that moment. As a supporter back in the day, it was beautiful. It wasn’t the end we hoped for, but it was a great moment. We have a plan to talk of that game with the players. It’s important for them to know the Club’s history.” Nancy explained.
